Yes, he's a former boss because the mob forced him into retirement. The main character and her twin sister moved away at just 16, and they went on to do what some would call a dirty life. Both girls became strippers, and they even worked in the adult entertainment industry making porn videos. They were able to earn a decent living and put themselves on the right track.
